TL;DR Use AppPolice for the Mac to control how much CPU the BlueJeans for Mac app can use (100% or 1 core seems to work) so that your computer is usable while using video and your battery won’t be zeroed by a one hour call.

I’m a big fan of using video for calls instead of just voice - participants are often far more engaged when you can all see each other, and you can give thumbs ups, raise your hand and give other visual cues as part of the conversation that avoids the usual voice conference call.

At Red Hat we encourage remote work, and one of the ways we make it work is to have a lot of video calls using BlueJeans, which works great for me on my Mac except for one horrible problem that tends to completely kill my experience - if I enable my camera (kind of important for a video call) when I’m using the BlueJeans desktop app (seems to happen with Chrome and browsers as well) the BlueJeans app seems to try to hog ALL of my CPU that it can use and when it has all the cores of my processor spinning away at maximum I will lose HALF of my Mac’s battery life after a one hour call!

I looked into running the BlueJeans app on Linux in a docker container with X11, but apps run this way on my Mac lose their native feel and end up being a bit laggy, though this approach might work for Linux users.

In the end I found a cool app for the Mac called AppPolice that allows you to control how much CPU an application can consume on your Mac, it has a simple GUI, runs in the background and can remember what you set for apps, so you don’t have to use it every time BlueJeans (or other apps) are misbehaving.

Getting it up and running is easy, just download and install the app from the Disk image on the AppPolice releases page and once it’s running launch BlueJeans and set its CPU to max 100% or 1 processor core which seems to work well for me - I might experiment and reduce this further but so far this hack works quite well.

With all of that, I can have much better video conference calls instead!

Installing the App

To get the latest version of the app, visit our Downloads page, or, simply join your first BlueJeans meeting and the App will install automatically:

  1. Start the installation
  2. Add the extension
  3. Click when download completes
  4. Double-click to launch the app
  5. Confirm to open the app
  6. You'll land in the prep room. To check to make sure you're ready to join the meeting, you can:
    • Check your image, to make sure you look good!
    • Mute (or unmute) your camera or mic
    • Change the device selection for camera, mic or speaker (if applicable)
    • Join the meeting, or
    • Join via another connection option (from a telephone, room system, share your screen only, and other options)

Integrate your BlueJeans App with your Gmail or Outlook Calendar. This will allow you to review recent meetings, and, see your upcoming meetings and join them directly from the App! The app supports:
- Gmail in Mac/Windows/Linux, and
- Outlook 2010, 2013, 2015 & 2016 in Windows.

  1. Click an upcoming meeting bar to see the details. Click the Join button to join the meeting,
  2. Hover over an upcoming meeting and click the Join button to go directly into the meeting,
  3. Click to join your Personal Meeting ID (use the 'i' link to copy your Personal Meeting URL),
  4. Click to Schedule a new meeting (from the web app),
  5. Join a different meeting (hosted by someone else), entering their meeting ID.

How is the app delivered on Windows; MSI or EXE?
The standard EXE installer is available from our Downloads page. Individual users who don’t have the app installed will be prompted to download the EXE file when they join a meeting and choose 'BlueJeans App' from the list of available Connection Options. Is there a Minimum Version Requirement?
In order to provide the best software and product support for our customers, we must periodically retire older versions of software. This enables BlueJeans to continue to innovate and deliver features and enhancements for our valued customers.
Effective January 1st, 2017, BlueJeans App versions 1.16 and older will be officially retired. Users on retired versions of the software will need to update to latest version. Users will be prompted to update to the latest version available, when the app launches. Once updated, all future updates will be done automatically.

How can I check which Version I'm Using and Update If Needed?

  1. Launch the BlueJeans App.
  2. Click on the 'Blue Jeans' tab in the top, left-hand, corner of the interface.
  3. Select 'About Blue Jeans' from the list to confirm your current BlueJeans App version.
  4. Select 'Check for Updates' from the list to confirm if any updates are available.
